When she was 15, Decker lived in Georgia. She was 17 when she caught the ear of a representative of independent label Big Yellow Dog Records who began selling her tracks to artists and labels. After Mercury Records president David Massey heard Decker's demos he passed the songs on to L.A. Reid head of the associated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid agreed to sign her up for an agreement with a record label. On August 9, 2009 she launched her self-titled debut album under the name Jessie James. Jessie James achieved a reasonable level of success, with Wanted making it to the Top 40 charts. Decker was always considered an "country" artist but this album is produced and marketed in a way that appeals to the pop market. After two more singles from the album stiffed Decker confronted label executives to have more control of her music. the next track Boys in the Summer was more of a country-centric release. Decker released her second album under two different titles: Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy. Mercury put it on hold after the first three singles did poorly in the country charts. Decker then was let go from the contract.
